In view of the reform of the debt brake agreed in the coalition agreement, the budget policy spokesman of the SPD parliamentary group, Thorsten Rudolph, called for a speedy process.

SPD budget maker calls for speed in reforming the debt brake
Rudolph told the "Rheinische Post": "I expect the government commission to develop a proposal for a modernization of the debt brake very quickly in the coming months, as agreed in the coalition agreement, which will enable permanent additional investments in strengthening our country."
"And I expect that, on the basis of this proposal, the government and the governing parties will then very seriously and constructively seek and find the necessary majorities among the democratic factions in the German Bundestag for a corresponding bill."
Addressing his coalition partner, Rudolph said he "naturally also expects this to succeed without causing further disciplinary problems in the CDU/CSU parliamentary group." The SPD politician was indirectly referring to the failed judicial election and the debate surrounding Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, which recently met with resistance from many CDU/CSU MPs.
Christian Haase, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group's budget policy spokesperson, expressed support for the commission but tempered expectations. The commission will be "high-caliber, with a wealth of budgetary expertise from academia, politics, and practice. This ensures that possible reform options can be discussed broadly and in-depth."
At the same time, Haase added: "However, the decisive factor in all reform considerations is that the debt brake remains anchored as a stability instrument and that European guidelines are adhered to."
