FDP leader Dürr makes migration policy a priority

In February, the Liberals were thrown out of the Bundestag. Since then, they've had a harder time making their voices heard. The party leader is now focusing on a much-discussed issue.
FDP leader Christian Dürr aims to regain lost voter trust by focusing on migration policy. Dürr told the "Tagesspiegel" newspaper: "I have decided that the FDP will make migration policy a priority." The FDP failed to re-enter parliament in the federal election on February 23, receiving 4.3 percent. Dürr – still parliamentary group leader in the old Bundestag – has led the Liberals since May 16.
"I link immigration policy with a willingness to perform," emphasized the party leader. He added: "Anyone who wants to achieve something here is very welcome. Anyone who doesn't want to do that must be clear that they will have no future in Germany. It must be easier to come to Germany to work than to come to Germany not to work."
Dürr accused the CDU/CSU of taking the wrong approach to migration policy. "The CDU/CSU simply wants a little less migration, but that's the wrong way of looking at things. The right kind of migration is needed." In other countries, such as Sweden, three out of four immigrants enter the labor market. "We have to make that happen, too. Immigration into the social security systems is dangerous, but immigration into the labor market is unavoidable to stabilize the social security systems," Dürr emphasized.
