By up to three years: Vitamin D3 could slow down aging

Scientists around the world are searching for ways to slow the aging process not only externally, but also at the cellular level. A new study from the USA now shows that vitamin D could slow cellular aging. A new study shows that the sunshine vitamin maintains the protective telomeres – and can thus slow the biological aging process.

The process: The ends of our chromosomes, called telomeres, play a key role in cell protection: They act like protective caps that prevent the genetic material from being damaged during cell division. With each division, these structures become shorter – a process considered a natural part of aging. Shortened telomeres are also considered a risk factor for age-related diseases.

An international research team is now providing new insights into how this process can possibly be stopped: According to a recent study, regular intake of vitamin D could help slow down the breakdown of telomeres – and thus also slow down biological aging.

As part of the study, more than 1,000 participants received either vitamin D3 (2,000 international units), omega-3 fatty acids, or a placebo daily for four years. The scientists measured telomere length at baseline and after two and four years. The most striking result: Only the vitamin D group showed a significantly slower shortening of telomeres. The difference corresponded to an aging advantage of almost three years. The administration of omega-3 fatty acids, in contrast, had no significant effect on cell aging.

Despite the positive results, experts advise against taking dietary supplements on your own. Before starting vitamin D supplementation, medical advice should be sought and a blood test performed if necessary. A consistently high dosage can have undesirable side effects, such as those affecting the kidneys or cardiovascular system.
