Fish recall at Edeka: Herring incorrectly labeled – this detail is dangerous

Edeka's current fish recall concerns "Fekoma Herring in Jelly" in the 200-gram container. The reason is a serious labeling error: The packaging incorrectly labels a different product, which is labeled "gluten-free," but the actual product contains gluten-containing wheat.
For people with celiac disease or severe gluten intolerance, consumption can have serious health consequences.
The recall affects the following products, which were sold at selected Rewe stores, among others:
Product name | Fekoma Herring in Jelly |
Packaging unit | 200 g – bowl |
Best before date (BBD) | December 17, 2025 |
Batch number / day code | 826 |
Barcode | 004702817009 |
Identity identifiers | MV EFB 018 |

The recall is being carried out because the packaging of “Fekoma Herring in Jelly” incorrectly states that it is “gluten-free.”
The product was covered with a false film and actually contains the product “Fekoma Fried Herring Fillets in Jelly 200g”, which in turn contains wheat containing gluten.
For people with celiac disease (a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system reacts to the protein gluten) or a severe gluten intolerance, consumption can have serious health consequences.
Even small amounts of gluten can cause gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and severe abdominal pain. In severe cases, this can lead to intestinal inflammation and long-term health problems.
- Do not consume: If you are gluten intolerant or suffer from celiac disease, you should not consume this product.
- Return: The affected batch can be returned to all Edeka stores – even without a receipt.
- Refund: The purchase price will be refunded in full.
- Monitor your health: If you experience any discomfort after consumption, consult a doctor immediately.
