Asia/Pacific equities: Well-performed at the start of the week - 'Tariff fatigue'

TOKYO/HONG KONG/SHANGHAI/SYDNEY (dpa-AFX) - At the start of the week, the major Asia-Pacific stock markets posted subdued gains. The trade disputes appear to have reached their peak, according to traders. The issue continues to cause uncertainty, but investors are also focusing on companies' quarterly financial statements. Investment strategist Billy Leung of Global X ETFs spoke of a certain "tariff fatigue" on Monday.

The 225-stock Japanese benchmark index, the Nikkei 225 , closed 0.4 percent higher at 35,839.99 points. At over 36,000 points, the index had temporarily reached its highest level since the end of March.

High on the Nikkei, shares of Shin-Etsu ( Shin-Etsu Chemical ) rose 6.5 percent. The chip wafer manufacturer plans to buy back its own shares for up to 500 billion yen. Meanwhile, the company's quarterly figures fell short of expectations.

The Hang Seng Index ( Hang Seng ) of the Chinese Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong was up moderately by 0.2 percent on Monday, at just over 22,000 points. The CSI 300 Index ( CSI 300 ), which tracks the most important mainland Chinese stocks, remained largely unchanged at 3,786 points./bek/mis
