Braunschweig: Observe a rare parade of planets in the night sky

A spectacular celestial event can currently be observed over Lower Saxony and Germany. That's why astronomy fans should act quickly.

A rare astronomical event is currently visible in the sky above Braunschweig : Seven planets can be observed simultaneously. According to experts at the Braunschweig Observatory, this so-called "great planet parade" will not occur again this decade.

Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are currently on the same side of the sun as the Earth. While some experts say today, Tuesday, is the best time to observe, others recommend next Friday. The planets are not lined up like a string of pearls as in previous parades, but are spread out in a great circle in the sky.

The weather could become a problem, however. According to the Hamburg Maritime Weather Office, clouds are increasingly gathering over Braunschweig on Tuesday evening. Wednesday evening offers better chances, when gaps in the clouds are expected in the hours before midnight. The best observation points are on the outskirts of Braunschweig, where there is less light pollution.

Astronomers recommend using binoculars to observe Uranus and Neptune, while the other planets can be seen with the naked eye when the sky is clear. Venus is the brightest planet and is particularly easy to see. "Such a celestial event is an impressive experience even for laypeople," explains Professor Michael Winkler from the Technical University of Braunschweig. The Astronomical Working Group is offering a public observation in the Prinzenpark on Friday evening - weather permitting.
